Tradition and History
The traditional handicraft originated in the middle of the 17th century from modest attempt to secure by hand-carved equipment for house and yard or a small toy extra income. It started with the fact that the inhabitants of until about a hundred years secluded and inaccessible mountain valley carved in the long winters and summer selling the products.
Out of need and through hard work, persistence and skill was a craft whose products are of sacred to profane and to purely decorative nature, are appreciated worldwide today.
The sculpture also new occupations came on: the barrel painter, gilder, the altar Bauer, the publisher, as well as the box Bauer (for shipping).
The material most commonly used of which the Val Gardena sculptors create their works is the native pinewood.
The sculptor offspring is formed with proven masters in vocational schools and art schools of Ortisei and Selva.
A large part of the Gardena sculptors and woodcarvers still exists today, to completely handmade pieces. The wood carvings produced have its own quality mark; they are guaranteed by contracts awarded by the Bolzano Chamber of Commerce trademark - a vessel engaged in carving metal flakes, which is put on by experts on the sculptures. The manual production is also confirmed by a certificate.
